WHO WE ARE
My name is Victor Amable De Los Santos Jimenez, and I am 26 years old. I graduated from dental school in the Dominican Republic.
I grew up in an orphanage called NPH (NUESTROS PEQUENOS HERMANOS), that I consider my real family. Within NPH, I have more than 150 friends I consider siblings. NPH instilled in me respect and compassion for others and a strong work ethic. I was fortunate to receive not just food, shelter, and love from NPH, but also a strong education.
Since I was little, I dreamed of one day becoming someone who helps others through health care. I was first inspired by of a group of dentists from Switzerland who came to the Dominican Republic to provide services at the NPH clinic.
What is NPH?
NPH is an international organization that provides care for at risk children across 9 countries throughout Latin America. NPH was founded in 1954 by a humble priest named Father William Wasson in Cuernavaca Mexico.
Part of a bigger plan
Many times, we judge our personal journey with statements like "why is this happening to me", but I am a firm believer that God has a plan for each of us.
I arrived at NPH in 2003 after my mother was killed. It was a horrible time in my life, but slowly I felt my life start to change. The team of caregivers and donors that support NPH created a feeling of family. I grew into the person I was meant to be, and I was able to go to school and complete my studies at Universidad Central del Este.
As a graduated dentist, I feel called to give back. My hope is to build a dental clinic to provide oral healthcare for underserved, impoverished communities. Here in the DR we have many poor communities. Bateyes are rural, under-resourced villages, largely populated by immigrants who work in agriculture. Typically, Bateyes lack even the most basic forms of health care. Our dental clinic could provide education, awareness, and care for individuals who would otherwise be without dental services. We would welcome and collaborate with dental students, licensed professionals, and volunteers like the ones who first inspired me to make this dream a reality. Like NPH taught me, we are stronger together, and what we can do for others is better than any self-satisfaction.
